Enhanced cleaning

Enhanced cleaning involves the implementation of effective cleaning and disinfecting protocols that help to reduce the risk of disease transmission. COVID-19, and many other respiratory illnesses, are primarily spread by air (droplet and aerosol), however, it is possible to become infected if an individual makes contact with a contaminated surface, and then proceeds to touch their nose, mouth, or eyes.

Cleaning protocols

The CDC recommends cleaning high-traffic or high-touch areas once a day to maintain a healthy facility. For more detailed instructions on cleaning and safety protocols, refer to the CDC’s recommended cleaning and disinfecting practices for mitigating COVID-19.Some general steps to follow include:

  1. Identify the desired surfaces and areas that need to be cleaned. Prioritize high-touch and high-traffic surfaces, since these pose the most risk.
  2. Clean high-touch and other surfaces once a day, or more frequently if appropriate.
  3. It may be desirable to clean more frequently, or to use disinfectant in addition to cleaning if the shared space:
    a) Is a high-traffic or high-touch area
    b) Is poorly ventilated
    c) Does not provide access to handwashing or hand sanitizer
    d) Is occupied by high-risk occupants

Products for cleaning and disinfecting

Cleaning with products containing soap/detergent and water helps to reduce germs and decrease the risk of disease transmission. Disinfecting helps to kill any remaining germs, which further reduces the risk of any infections. Many cleaning products also include disinfectants, however, it is possible to use two separate products in addition to a two-in-one. To find CDC-recommended product and associated procedures, refer to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s List N disinfectants. Pay careful attention to wetting time guidance for each product.
